Why it matters

  1. Highlights the significance of immigrant contributions. By chronicling Leila Dyce’s journey from Jamaica to New York and her active civic and religious life, the resolution underscores the positive impact immigrants have on local communities and cultural life.

  2. Recognizes intergenerational influence. The resolution notes her role as a family matriarch and community “mother,” emphasizing the value of elders in transmitting values, offering guidance, and providing emotional support across generations.

  3. Elevates the importance of community service and faith-based involvement. By detailing her decades of dedication to her church and charitable activities, the resolution encourages ongoing community engagement and volunteerism as central to social well-being.

  4. Affirms the role of public recognition in community cohesion. The act of publicly honoring centenarians like Dyce serves not only as personal acknowledgment but also as a way to inspire others, promote respect for seniors, and celebrate shared cultural heritage.
