This resolution mourns the death of Scott J. Beigel, honoring his heroism as a teacher who protected students during the Parkland shooting.
Why it matters
Highlights the risks educators face. The resolution underscores that teachers and school staff are often on the front lines during emergencies, risking their lives to protect students, which adds urgency to ongoing conversations about school safety and the responsibilities placed on educators.
Shows the personal impact of national tragedies. By detailing Scott J. Beigel’s background, family, and ties to New York, the resolution connects the Parkland tragedy to communities outside Florida, demonstrating how mass shootings affect people across the country.
Serves as a call to honor everyday heroism. The legislation frames Beigel’s actions as exemplary of the compassion and courage expected—and often delivered—by educators, potentially inspiring similar recognition for other acts of heroism.
Reflects societal values through legislative action. The resolution is a formal acknowledgment by the state legislature of Beigel’s sacrifice, illustrating how government bodies can express collective grief, support for victims’ families, and the value placed on altruism in public service.
