What's happening

This resolution honors Dr. Robert Gore for being named a 2018 CNN Hero for his work in violence intervention and emergency medicine.

Why it matters

  1. Recognizes the impact of grassroots violence intervention. By highlighting Dr. Gore’s creation of the Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI), the resolution underscores the importance of community-driven, hospital-based programs that provide both physical and psychological support to those affected by violence.

  2. Highlights a model for youth empowerment and leadership. The resolution points to KAVI’s use of peer mentors—many of whom are program graduates themselves—which offers a replicable approach for other communities seeking to break cycles of violence through youth engagement in mediation and conflict resolution.

  3. Emphasizes the importance of mentorship and diversity in medicine. Dr. Gore’s founding of the Minority Medical Student Emergency Medicine (MMSEM) Summer Fellowship demonstrates the need for targeted support and opportunities for underrepresented minorities in the medical field, potentially inspiring further investment in similar initiatives.

  4. Showcases global health leadership. The resolution not only honors local contributions, but also draws attention to Dr. Gore’s international work in emergency medicine and disaster management, reflecting the broader significance of supporting medical professionals who address health disparities both at home and abroad.
