What's happening

This resolution honors Deputy Jon Vosburgh with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal for heroically saving a young girl from drowning.

Why it matters

  1. Recognizes extraordinary personal risk and courage. The resolution highlights Deputy Vosburgh’s decision to enter dangerous, cold waters to save a child, emphasizing that such acts of bravery can inspire both law enforcement and the public to act decisively in emergencies.

  2. Honors service to vulnerable individuals. The incident involved a non-verbal, special needs child, underlining the importance of protecting society’s most vulnerable members and the unique challenges responders face during such rescues.

  3. Affirms the value of public service and military experience. By noting Vosburgh’s background as both a sheriff’s deputy and a Marine Corps veteran, the resolution underscores how skills and dedication from various forms of service can translate into lifesaving actions within the community.

  4. Promotes the Senate Liberty Medal as a standard of heroism. The award aims to publicly recognize and set a high bar for exceptional heroism and humanitarian actions, reinforcing the Senate’s role in celebrating selfless acts that benefit New Yorkers.
