What's happening
This resolution recognizes April 7-13, 2019, as National Library Week in New York, honoring the contributions of libraries and library workers.
Why it matters
Highlights the evolving role of libraries. The resolution underscores that libraries are now much more than places to borrow books—they are vital community centers that foster collaboration, skill-building, and access to new technologies, reflecting how libraries adapt to meet changing community needs.
Acknowledges the broad impact of libraries. It recognizes that libraries serve a diverse population, including students, small business owners, English-language learners, and the general public, demonstrating their importance as a resource for education, economic opportunity, and social well-being.
Connects local and national efforts. By participating in a nationally observed week and recognizing prominent figures like Melinda Gates, the resolution ties New York’s library community to broader national conversations about literacy, lifelong learning, and the role of information in society.
Emphasizes statewide reach and public investment. With over 1,100 library branches and outlets serving New Yorkers, the resolution highlights the scale of public investment in libraries and their potential to impact individuals and communities across the state.
