What's happening

This bill repeals specific sections of a 2013 law regarding the suspension and revocation of firearms licenses in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Restores previous standards for suspending and revoking firearms licenses. By repealing major sections of the 2013 law, this bill could make it more difficult for authorities to suspend or revoke firearms licenses, potentially changing how and when licenses can be removed from gun owners.

  2. Impacts background check and reporting requirements. The repealed sections likely included provisions for information sharing, background checks, or mental health reporting related to firearms licensing. Their removal could reduce oversight mechanisms designed to prevent high-risk individuals from possessing firearms.

  3. Affects legal rights and protections for firearm owners. This repeal may expand legal protections for current and prospective gun owners in New York by rolling back restrictions and procedures established in 2013, potentially altering the balance between public safety and individual gun rights.

  4. May influence future legal and policy debates. Changing or undoing high-profile firearms regulations can set precedents for how gun laws are developed or challenged in New York and possibly elsewhere, impacting ongoing debates about gun control and Second Amendment rights.
