What's happening

This bill proposes constitutional amendments to impose term limits on New York's governor, comptroller, attorney-general, and state legislators.

Why it matters

  1. Prevents long-term consolidation of power by limiting governors, comptrollers, and attorneys-general to a fixed number of terms. , potentially encouraging fresh perspectives and reducing the advantages of incumbency in statewide executive offices.

  2. Limits state legislators to six two-year terms (12 years total) in either or both legislative chambers. , promoting legislative turnover and reducing opportunities for career politicians, which could shift legislative priorities and increase responsiveness to voters.

  3. Exempts current officeholders from these new term limits. , allowing those in office at the time of enactment to serve additional terms beyond the new limits, which may delay the immediate impact of the reforms.

  4. Aims to address concerns of political stagnation, entrenched interests, and lack of accountability. by mandating regular turnover in both executive and legislative branches, potentially altering the dynamics of policy-making, leadership selection, and political strategy in New York State.
