AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to extending the Thousand Islands - Seaway Wine Trail
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:
Section 1. Section 343-s of the highway law, as added by chapter 382 of the laws of 2005, is amended to read as follows:
§ 343-s. Portion of the state highway system in the county of Jefferson to be designated as the "Thousand Islands - Seaway Wine Trail". All that portion of the state and county highway system located in the county of Jefferson and beginning at the intersection of Chestnut Ridge Road and state route three at Wescott Beach State Park, and continuing north on state route three to its junction with state route one hundred eighty, and continuing north along state route one hundred eighty to its intersection with state route [twelve] twelve-E, and continuing north along state route [twelve] twelve-E in the town of [Clayton] Cape Vincent, and continuing further north along state route [twelve] twelve-E in the town of Clayton to its intersection with state route twelve in the town of Clayton, and continuing further north along state route twelve to its intersection with state route twenty-six in the town of Alexandria, and continuing east along state route twenty-six to the unincorporated community of Theresa, and continuing further east along state route twenty-six to its intersection with United States route eleven in the unincorporated community of Philadelphia, and continuing south along United States route eleven to the unincorporated community of Evans Mills, and continuing further south on United States route eleven to its intersection with state route three hundred forty-two, and

Purpose
Extends a portion of the state highway system in Jefferson County as the "Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail".
Summary of provisions
This legislation amends chapter 382 of the laws of 2005 in relation to an extension of the state highway system along state route twelve east in the county of Jefferson known as the "Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail." The wineries and vineyards along the trail will be responsible for the cost of the signs.
Section 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
Justification
Over the past decade, the Thousand Islands and Seaway Wine Trail has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern New York, encouraging hundreds of thousands of people to visit small town wineries and vineyards across the region. As small family owned agribusinesses, the wine trail helps them to work together to market themselves as regional tourist attractions. Extending the existing trail, established in 2007, from Clayton to Cape Vincent will help make the public aware of newer wineries, giving both visitors and residents additional reasons to explore the western end of Jefferson County. The Thousand Islands and Seaway Wine Trail has dramatically raised the profile of the North Coun- try's growing craft beverage industry. Tens of thousands of families have crisscrossed the region following the existing trail to visit the wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms, boosting business to surrounding museums, stores, restaurants and other attractions, expanding business and employment opportunities.
