What's happening

This bill allows certain school districts in Suffolk County to form a central high school district even if their territories are not contiguous.

Why it matters

  1. Allows specific school districts in Suffolk County to collaborate more easily. by permitting non-contiguous territories, the bill enables partnerships among listed districts that may otherwise be blocked by geographic gaps or boundaries.

  2. Could improve educational resources and opportunities. districts forming a central high school district can pool resources, potentially offering broader curriculum choices, extracurriculars, and shared facilities for students.

  3. Supports adaptation to local needs and changing demographics. districts facing enrollment fluctuations, budget constraints, or unique population patterns may benefit from more flexible regional arrangements.

  4. Might influence transportation and community planning. non-contiguous central high school districts may need to address student transportation logistics and foster a sense of community identity across separated areas.

Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to central high school districts in the county of Suffolk

Purpose

Provides that the territory of central high school districts that merge in the county of Suffolk does not need to be contiguous.

Summary of provisions

Section 1912 of the education law is amended to provide that the forma- tion of central high school districts in the county of Suffolk that may be formed by the combination of two or more of the following central, union free or common school districts in the county of Suffolk need not be contiguous: Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, East Moriches, Springs, Wainscott, Sagaponack, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton, Tuckahoe, Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Quogue, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach and Remsenburg-Speonk

Justification

Section 1912 of the education laws allows central high school districts in Suffolk County to be formed by the combination of two or more central, union free or common school districts. The current law, howev- er, precludes districts whose territories are not contiguous from creat- ing a central high school district. This bill provides that the follow- ing school districts within Suffolk County need not be contiguous to allow them to consider merging to create a central highs school district: Montauk, Amagansett, East Hampton, East Moriches, Springs, Wainscott, Sagaponack, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Southampton, Tuckahoe, Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Quogue, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach and Remsenburg-Speonk.
