What's happening
This bill gives service-related disabled veterans preference for affordable home ownership opportunities under New York's affordable housing program.
Why it matters
Expands eligibility for affordable home ownership. to include not just low-income households, but also households where the homebuyer is a service-related disabled veteran, even if their income is above the previous threshold—potentially increasing access for veterans who may not otherwise qualify.
Defines “service related disabled veteran” clearly. , ensuring that only those with a 40% or higher disability rating from the federal VA or Department of Defense, whose disability was incurred in the line of duty, benefit from this preference—targeting the policy to those most impacted by their service.
May increase competition and prioritize veterans. in affordable housing programs, which could impact availability for other low-income applicants, but aims to recognize and address the unique challenges disabled veterans face in securing stable housing.
