AN ACT to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting peace officer status to traffic enforcement officers and traffic enforcement agents
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:
Section 1. Section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law is amended by adding a new subdivision 85 to read as follows:
85. Traffic enforcement officers or traffic enforcement agents employed by the city of New York; provided, however, that nothing in this subdivision shall be deemed to authorize such officers to carry, possess, repair or dispose of a firearm unless the appropriate license therefor has been issued pursuant to section 400.00 of the penal law.
§ 2. This act shall take effect on the first of November next succeeding the date on which it shall have become a law.

Summary of provisions
Amends section 2.10 of the Criminal Procedure Law to grant peace officer status to traffic enforcement officers and traffic enforcement agents employed by the City of New York.
Existing law
Currently, the traffic enforcement officers and traffic enforcement agents employed by the City of New York are not classified as peace officers.
Justification
Traffic enforcement officers and agents are under potential harassment and stress at their job at any time due to the actions of many citizens who resent their adherence to traffic rules and regulations. Many traf- fic enforcement officers have been the victims of physical violence for simply doing their job. This bill would recognize the day to day duties of traffic enforcement officers and agents with regard to the regular issuance of summonses, giving lawful orders to motorists and the special duties when assigned to crowd control and enhanced law enforcement activities.
