What's happening

This bill establishes a task force to address and develop policy recommendations for affordable housing for millennials in New York's suburban counties.

Why it matters

  1. Brings together diverse housing stakeholders. The task force is designed to include representatives from government, housing providers, real estate, mortgage sectors, and millennial consumers, ensuring a broad range of perspectives are involved in shaping policy recommendations.

  2. Focuses on the unique needs of millennials (ages 25-35). By specifically targeting this age group, the bill acknowledges the distinct economic and social barriers millennials face in accessing affordable suburban housing, aiming for tailored solutions rather than one-size-fits-all policies.

  3. Prioritizes suburban counties with acute challenges. The formation of a sub-task force for Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties targets areas with some of the state's highest housing costs, potentially leading to more relevant and actionable recommendations for the regions most affected.

  4. Lays groundwork for legislative and policy change. The task force is explicitly charged with reviewing existing initiatives, fostering interagency collaboration, and developing concrete legislative and policy proposals, which could drive future state actions and funding to address suburban millennial housing issues.

The task force will act as a liaison between different agencies and the constituents to address this issue.

Prior legislative history

New legislation.

Fiscal implications for state and local governments

None to the state.

Effective date

This act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall have become law.
