        COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Town of
        Erin
 
  WHEREAS,  It  is  the  intent  of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate  the  distinguished  histories  of  the  communities   which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Attendant  to  such  concern,  and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this  Legislative  Body  is  justly  proud  to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Erin in Chemung County,
New York; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The Town of Erin was formed in 1822; the first settler was
Basil Sperry in the Red Chalk area in 1815; his wife was the first death
in Erin; and
 
  WHEREAS, The town had several names before they decided on the  name
Erin;  they  were  Rodbournville,  Erin Centre, and Erin Go Braugh which
means "Erin for Ever"; and
 
  WHEREAS, Michael Robinson was from Ireland and he  was  involved  in
numerous  activities  in Erin and became well-respected by all; the area
reminded him of his homeland so the name Erin was chosen for  the  town;
and
 
  WHEREAS, The Town of Erin was a dense land of trees and settlers had
to  remove them and blaze trails through the wilderness to make room for
their homesteads; and
 
  WHEREAS, There were several small mills until Joseph Rodbourn  built
one in 1868 where the Erin Post Office is currently located; and
 
  WHEREAS,  In 1874, the railroad came through the Town of Erin; there
were two stations, one where Erin Estates is now and the  other  was  at
Park Station; the last train came through Erin in 1938; and
 
  WHEREAS,  There  were  many churches in the Town of Erin including a
Presbyterian Church, a Methodist/Protestant Church,  a  Baptist  Church,
and another Methodist Church which is still being used today; and
 
  WHEREAS,  The  Town  of  Erin  also had several cemeteries, schools,
three hotels, and taverns;  furthermore,  the  residents  were  doctors,
cobblers, coopers, and chair makers; and
 
  WHEREAS,  Remaining  fruitful  over  the  ebb and flow of decades of
growth and  change,  the  Town  of  Erin  continues  its  commitment  to
enhancing  the  quality  of  life  of  its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional  and  educational  climate,  and  providing  all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
 
  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Erin,  recognizing  the
 
significance  of  the  role  it  continues  to  play  in the life of the
communities of the State of New York; and be it further
 
  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Town of Erin.
