What's happening

This bill requires New York to develop and implement a comprehensive education campaign on the dangers of cannabinoid use.

Why it matters

  1. Raises public awareness of cannabinoid risks. By mandating an education campaign specifically about the dangers of cannabinoid use, the bill goes beyond general cannabis information and seeks to inform New Yorkers about health and safety issues linked to cannabinoids—including those found in unregulated or synthetic products.

  2. Targets mental health and addiction concerns. The campaign must be developed with input from the Office of Addiction Services and Supports and the Office of Mental Health, suggesting a focus on how cannabinoid use can affect mental health and potentially lead to substance use disorders.

  3. Influences consumer choices and public safety. By providing clearer information on the dangers of cannabinoid use, the campaign aims to discourage risky behaviors, such as using untested or illicit cannabinoid products, which could help reduce accidental poisonings, overdoses, and other public health incidents.

  4. Impacts regulation and enforcement. Educating the public on cannabinoid dangers may support broader efforts to steer consumers towards legal, regulated products and away from the gray or black market, reinforcing the goals of New York's cannabis legalization framework.
