What's happening

This bill prohibits school board members or trustees from having family members employed by the same board or school district.

Why it matters

  1. Aims to reduce conflicts of interest. by preventing school board members from making decisions that could directly benefit their own family members working under the same board or district.

  2. May increase public trust in school governance. , as it limits the perception or reality of favoritism, nepotism, or undue influence within school district hiring and employment practices.

  3. Could affect who is eligible to serve on school boards. , potentially making it harder for individuals with family ties to district employees to participate, which may impact the pool of candidates in smaller or tightly-knit communities.

  4. Applies only to new board members or trustees elected or appointed after the law takes effect. , meaning current members with family ties in the district would not be forced to resign, but future candidates will need to consider family employment before running.
