What's happening

The MEAL Act requires New York public schools to offer plant-based, halal, and kosher meal or snack options at no extra cost.

Why it matters

  1. Increases food inclusivity and cultural sensitivity in public schools. , ensuring that students with religious dietary needs (halal, kosher) and those avoiding animal products are not excluded or forced to bring their own meals.

  2. Reduces stigma and peer differences. for students who require alternative meals, as these options must be offered as standard choices, not special accommodations.

  3. Mandates cost parity. , so families who need or prefer plant-based, halal, or kosher options are not financially penalized compared to those choosing standard meals.

  4. Requires schools to manage meal selection logistics. , as students or their guardians must be able to select or change their meal preference up to three times per school year, impacting food service planning and administrative tracking.
