What's happening

This bill increases the mileage fees sheriffs can charge in New York City.

Why it matters

  1. Directly impacts residents and businesses in New York City who require services from the sheriff. , such as serving legal papers or enforcing court orders, by increasing the fees they will pay for mileage.

  2. Represents the first fee increase since 2013 for these sheriff services. , signaling a significant adjustment that could affect legal costs for individuals, attorneys, and organizations involved in civil proceedings within the city.

  3. May have broader implications for access to justice. while the increase might better compensate sheriffs for travel costs, it could also make certain legal actions (like serving eviction notices or subpoenas) more expensive for lower-income New Yorkers.
