What's happening

This bill allows certain small towns in New York to temporarily halt annexing large agricultural lands for industrial use.

Why it matters

  1. Protects Local Agriculture. By allowing small towns to pause annexation of large agricultural lands for industrial purposes, this bill helps prevent the sudden loss of farmland, which can be vital to the community’s economy and food supply.

  2. Supports Thoughtful Planning. The moratorium gives towns time to update their agricultural and farmland protection plans, encouraging more careful and future-oriented decision-making about land use rather than rushed or piecemeal industrial development.

  3. Empowers Local Decision-Making. Only towns that have already demonstrated a commitment to agricultural protection can use this moratorium, reinforcing local control and the value of proactive land management policies.
