What's happening
This bill extends the state's authority to manage squid fishing until December 31, 2029.
Why it matters
This extension directly affects commercial and recreational squid fishers along New York’s coast, especially in Long Island and other marine districts where squid fishing is economically significant.
The bill preserves the Department of Environmental Conservation’s power to set quotas, seasons, and other regulations for squid, helping balance sustainable harvests with the needs of the fishing industry.
Failing to extend this authority could lead to unregulated squid fishing, potentially harming local marine ecosystems and undermining New York’s compliance with regional and federal fishery management plans.
