What's happening

This bill extends permission to hunt big game with rifles in Tompkins County until 2028.

Why it matters

  1. Directly impacts hunters and landowners in Tompkins County. by continuing to allow the use of rifles for big game hunting, which can affect local hunting practices, game management, and related economic activity.

  2. Represents a continuation rather than a permanent change. the law is extended only through 2028, maintaining a temporary “trial period” approach that could be revisited or reversed in the future, rather than making rifle hunting a permanent fixture.

  3. Could influence safety, wildlife populations, and regional hunting tourism. by keeping rifle hunting legal, stakeholders such as local governments, law enforcement, and wildlife officials will need to keep monitoring the outcomes and impacts in Tompkins County.
