What's happening
This bill requires the Department of State to create and maintain a public statewide registry of mental hygiene and child supervision residential facilities.
Why it matters
Centralizes facility information for transparency. By requiring a public, up-to-date registry of all regulated residential facilities for mental health, developmental disabilities, child supervision, and addiction services, the bill makes it far easier for families, advocates, and communities to identify and evaluate these facilities statewide.
Enhances oversight and accountability. Regular submission of facility lists by state oversight agencies ensures that the registry is comprehensive and current, which can help detect unauthorized or unlicensed facilities and support state oversight and quality control efforts.
Empowers public and legislative access. Making the registry available in multiple formats (print, electronic, and online) and providing it to the legislature at least twice a year increases transparency for policymakers and the public, potentially informing future reforms and resource allocation.
Supports informed decision-making and safety. With centralized, accessible information, individuals seeking care for themselves or loved ones can make safer, better-informed choices, and local communities can be aware of facilities operating nearby.
