What's happening

This bill requires all New York schools to provide age-appropriate anti-gun violence education, with curriculum standards set by the commissioner.

Why it matters

  1. Mandates all schools to integrate anti-gun violence education into standard classroom teaching. , meaning this topic will become a consistent part of the learning experience for students across the state rather than an optional or peripheral subject.

  2. Gives the state education commissioner broad authority to set rules, curriculum, and standards for anti-gun violence instruction. , which can result in significant variation between districts but ensures every program must be either state-approved or directly follow state-issued curriculum.

  3. Requires schools to dedicate resources—such as classroom time, facilities, and instructional materials—to support this education. , potentially impacting school budgets, teacher training needs, and the allocation of time away from other subjects.

  4. Signals an increased prioritization of gun violence prevention as a public health and safety issue within the educational system. , which could influence community awareness, student perspectives, and potentially long-term cultural attitudes towards gun violence.

Introduced by M. of A. ROSENTHAL, ROZIC, COOK, RAGA -- read once and referred to the Committee on Education

AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring instruction in anti-gun violence in all schools

The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 805 to read as follows:

3. School authorities shall provide the needed facilities, time and place for the instruction set forth in this section and shall provide learning aids and curriculum resource materials which contribute to effective teaching methods and learning in anti-gun violence.
