What's happening
This bill requires that batteries used in electric-assist bicycles be included in New York's rechargeable battery recycling laws.
Why it matters
Expands recycling requirements to e-bike batteries. By explicitly including batteries from electric-assist bicycles, the bill closes a loophole that previously exempted them, ensuring manufacturers and retailers are responsible for their safe recycling.
Addresses fire and safety concerns. E-bike batteries, particularly lithium-ion types, have been linked to fires and environmental hazards when improperly disposed of. This law aims to mitigate those risks by channeling them into regulated recycling streams.
Promotes environmental protection and resource recovery. Proper recycling of e-bike batteries helps prevent toxic materials from entering landfills and waterways, while also enabling the recovery of valuable metals for reuse.
Supports growing micromobility use. As e-bikes become more popular in New York, this legislation ensures the infrastructure keeps pace, encouraging responsible end-of-life management and supporting sustainable urban transportation options.
