What's happening

This bill requires colleges and social services to notify applicants that qualifying work-study or internships fulfill public assistance work requirements.

Why it matters

  1. Increases awareness for low-income students. By requiring colleges and social services to notify applicants, the bill helps students who rely on public assistance understand they can meet work requirements through academic-related work placements, potentially reducing the risk of losing benefits due to misunderstanding or lack of information.

  2. Simplifies compliance for vulnerable populations. The change allows recipients of public assistance to use work-study, internships, and related experiences to fulfill mandatory work obligations, making it easier for them to remain eligible for benefits while pursuing higher education or training.

  3. Supports educational attainment and upward mobility. By clarifying that academic work placements count toward public assistance requirements, the bill removes a barrier that might otherwise force students to choose between their education and maintaining essential benefits, thus supporting their long-term economic stability.
