What's happening

This bill requires the New York Department of Transportation to remove invasive vines threatening trees along state highways and thruways.

Why it matters

  1. Addresses public safety concerns. by requiring proactive removal of invasive vines that threaten to cause trees or limbs to fall onto highways, reducing risks of accidents, injuries, or property damage from falling debris.

  2. Protects state infrastructure and reduces maintenance costs. by preventing damage to roads, vehicles, and utility lines that can result from tree failures along heavily traveled corridors.

  3. Recognizes the ecological impact of invasive species. by specifically targeting vines that harm native trees, supporting healthier roadside ecosystems and potentially reducing the spread of invasive plants into surrounding areas.

  4. Integrates environmental management into routine state operations. , ensuring that vine removal becomes a standard component of existing vegetative management rather than a separate or ad hoc effort.
