What's happening
This bill requires all new residential electric vehicle charging stations in New York to have an external cutoff switch.
Why it matters
Improves emergency safety. Having an external cutoff switch allows first responders, electricians, or homeowners to quickly disconnect power to a charging station during a fire, flood, or electrical emergency—potentially reducing risks of shock or worsening damage.
Affects both new construction and home sales. The requirement applies not just to new builds, but also when a home with a permanently installed EV charger is sold or transferred, meaning it could impact property transactions and may require retrofits.
Standardizes charger accessibility. The cutoff switch must be hand-operated, not require a key, and be placed outside the house or garage, making it accessible in urgent situations without needing to enter the building.
Could add installation costs or complexity. Homeowners and builders may face higher costs or more complicated planning for EV charger installation, which could influence adoption rates or project timelines.
