What's happening
This bill requires New York colleges to provide sexual harassment training to all students participating in internships or externships.
Why it matters
Expands student protections. By mandating sexual harassment training for all interns and externs, the bill aims to better protect students from harassment in both paid and unpaid work environments, where they may be particularly vulnerable due to power imbalances and unfamiliarity with workplace norms.
Standardizes safety education across institutions. The requirement applies to both public and independent colleges and universities, ensuring that all students in New York have consistent access to critical workplace harassment education, regardless of where they study.
Establishes institutional accountability. By requiring annual reports to the governor and legislature detailing how many students received training, the bill creates a mechanism for oversight and encourages colleges to prioritize compliance and transparency in safeguarding students.
