What's happening

This bill requires SUNY and CUNY institutions to grant academic credit to veterans for applicable military training or service.

Why it matters

  1. Broadens who qualifies as a "veteran". for academic credit, including those with general discharges, certain "qualifying conditions," and discharged LGBT veterans—potentially expanding access beyond traditional definitions and supporting historically marginalized groups.

  2. Removes limits on the number of credits. that veterans can receive for applicable military courses, which could allow some to graduate more quickly and save significant time and money on their degrees.

  3. Requires that awarded credits align with academic standards. of the individual institution, preserving academic integrity while still valuing military experience—meaning not all training may automatically transfer, but relevant coursework must be considered.

  4. Prohibits charging fees for the evaluation or awarding of these credits,. ensuring that veterans are not financially penalized for seeking recognition of their military training, and potentially reducing barriers to higher education completion.
