What's happening

This bill requires New York schools to implement literacy, career readiness, and financial literacy programs for pre-K to third grade students.

Why it matters

  1. Early targeted literacy assessments. mean students struggling with reading are identified sooner, and schools must actively plan and resource interventions, potentially reducing future academic disparities.

  2. Career exposure from a young age. introduces children to a wide range of professions, helping to broaden aspirations and connect classroom learning to real-world possibilities early in life.

  3. Monthly financial literacy education. aims to build foundational money management skills, potentially reducing future issues with debt and financial instability by starting these lessons in the earliest years of schooling.

  4. Accountability and resource planning requirements. ensure schools can’t just implement these programs in name only—they must document plans, identify specific needs, and take active steps to support students in each area.
