What's happening

This bill allows social services to provide up to $80 every three months for diapers for eligible children age two or younger.

Why it matters

  1. Addresses Diaper Need. By providing a specific allowance for diapers, the bill directly addresses "diaper need," a common and often unrecognized hardship for low-income families, which can impact child health and parental stress.

  2. Reduces Financial Strain on Families. The $80 quarterly subsidy helps families avoid difficult choices between buying diapers and paying for other essentials like food, rent, or utilities, improving overall household stability.

  3. Supports Child Health and Development. Regular access to clean diapers is critical for preventing diaper rash, infections, and related health issues, supporting healthier outcomes for infants and toddlers.

  4. Limits and Targets Assistance. The benefit is capped and restricted to children age two or younger, focusing state resources on the period when diaper costs are highest and helping to ensure the program’s sustainability and effectiveness.
