What's happening
This bill allows courts to issue additional orders of protection when reviewing extreme risk or temporary extreme risk protection order petitions.
Why it matters
Streamlines legal protections. The bill lets courts address multiple safety concerns in one proceeding, allowing them to issue orders of protection (like restraining orders) alongside extreme risk protection orders, which could offer more comprehensive and immediate protection for at-risk individuals.
Reduces gaps in safety. By permitting the court to consider and grant additional protective orders under criminal, domestic relations, or family law during the same review, the bill minimizes the risk of someone slipping through the cracks between different legal systems.
Empowers petitioners. People seeking an extreme risk protection order (often related to gun removal for safety reasons) can now ask for other protective orders at the same time, making the process less burdensome and potentially faster for those in danger.
Enhances judicial flexibility. Judges are given explicit authority to consider broader protective needs in one hearing, which may lead to more tailored, effective interventions for individuals facing threats from a variety of circumstances—not just those involving firearms.
