What's happening

This bill allows registered pharmacy technicians in New York to administer immunizations under a pharmacist’s supervision after completing required training and certification.

Why it matters

  1. Expands immunization access and convenience. by allowing trained pharmacy technicians to give vaccines, which could reduce wait times and make it easier for patients to get vaccinated, especially in areas with limited healthcare providers.

  2. Sets rigorous training and certification standards,. including mandatory CPR or basic life support certification, ensuring that only qualified technicians can administer immunizations safely and respond to emergencies.

  3. Preserves pharmacist oversight and patient safety. by requiring direct supervision—meaning the supervising pharmacist must be on-site or immediately available—helping to minimize risks and maintain high standards of care.

  4. Places responsibility on pharmacies. to verify technician competence and compliance with all requirements, potentially leading to improved internal training protocols and quality assurance within pharmacy operations.
