What's happening
This bill requires the Department of Labor to study and report on how driverless vehicles could impact jobs and employment in New York.
Why it matters
Identifies potential risks to jobs in transportation and delivery sectors. By requiring an analysis of the impact on workers, this bill acknowledges that driverless vehicles could disrupt employment for drivers, couriers, and related occupations, prompting early consideration of how to support affected workers.
Aims to inform policy before widespread adoption. The mandated study and report could influence how New York prepares for autonomous vehicle technology, including possible workforce retraining, economic transition strategies, or regulatory adjustments to address anticipated changes.
Provides a foundation for further legislative action. The findings and recommendations produced by the Department of Labor may serve as a basis for future laws or initiatives, giving lawmakers concrete data to shape responses to technological disruption in the job market.
