What's happening

This bill requires New York to create and maintain a public directory of businesses closed for illegal cannabis sales, including owner information and violations.

Why it matters

  1. Increases transparency and public accountability. by making detailed information about businesses closed for illegal cannabis sales—such as owner names, building owners, and specific violations—readily available to the public.

  2. Puts additional pressure on landlords and business owners. to ensure their properties are not used for illegal cannabis sales, since their names and involvement will be published in the directory.

  3. Facilitates more coordinated enforcement. by requiring regular updates and collaboration between the state cannabis office, local agencies, and police, which could lead to faster responses and more consistent crackdowns on illegal operators.

  4. May impact business reputations and future licensing. by publicly documenting violations and penalties, potentially influencing decisions by banks, insurers, and legitimate cannabis market participants.
