What's happening

This bill requires a statewide public awareness campaign on safe firearm storage and child access prevention, and repeals certain executive law provisions.

Why it matters

  1. Increases public education on safe firearm storage. By mandating a statewide public awareness campaign, the bill aims to inform gun owners and the broader public about existing laws, best practices, and available safety methods, which could lead to greater compliance and reduced accidental shootings, particularly among children.

  2. Centralizes and updates firearm safety resources. The law requires that educational materials about safe storage and child access prevention be made easily accessible online and to any requesting agency, ensuring up-to-date, accurate information reaches a wide audience, including law enforcement, schools, and community organizations.

  3. Mandates regular updates to safety information. Requiring annual reviews and updates of the educational materials ensures that the campaign remains relevant as laws and technologies change, which is important for sustaining long-term effectiveness in preventing unauthorized child access and firearm-related injuries.

  4. Streamlines existing legal framework. By repealing certain provisions in the executive law and consolidating responsibility under the Department of Health, the bill may reduce confusion and overlap in government efforts, potentially making firearm safety initiatives more efficient and coherent for New Yorkers.
