What's happening
This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim June 1-7, 2025, as Hidradenitis Suppurativa Awareness Week in New York.
Why it matters
Raises visibility of a little-known, chronic illness. By designating an official awareness week, the resolution aims to address low public and professional recognition of Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), which often leads to delayed diagnoses and prolonged suffering for patients.
Highlights health disparities and vulnerable groups. The resolution underscores that HS disproportionately affects women and African-American/biracial individuals, helping frame the disease as both a medical and social equity issue.
Supports patient advocacy and resource networks. By aligning with national efforts and groups like the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Coalition, the resolution encourages the development of support systems, educational materials, and broader advocacy for those affected by HS.
Encourages research and improved healthcare response. Official recognition can drive calls for more research funding and training for health professionals, with the goal of reducing the average nine-year delay in diagnosis and improving outcomes for people with HS.
