What's happening

This resolution commends Eric VanAuken for receiving the Liberty Medal for his heroic actions in saving a life at Lake George.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the value of immediate, decisive action in emergencies. Eric VanAuken’s response, alongside a coworker, directly led to a life being saved, showing the profound impact that preparedness and willingness to help can have in critical moments.

  2. Underscores the broader community effort in crisis situations. the rescue was not the work of one person alone but involved teamwork between VanAuken, Brandon Gruttemeyer, and later, emergency medical professionals and specialized hospital staff, illustrating how layered, coordinated responses can be essential for survival.

  3. Elevates everyday heroism and its role in shaping community values. by officially recognizing VanAuken, the resolution serves to inspire others to act selflessly and reinforces the importance of civic responsibility and compassion as shared values in New York State.

  4. Brings attention to the ripple effects of individual actions. the rescued individual’s recovery not only affected him and his family but also highlighted the capacity for ordinary citizens to create positive, life-altering outcomes through courage and quick thinking.
