What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Hochul to declare March 22, 2025, as Doula Day in New York to honor doulas' contributions.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the broad impact of doulas. The resolution emphasizes that doulas play a crucial role beyond childbirth, improving not only the physical but also the social, emotional, and psychological health of mothers, newborns, and their families during birth and postpartum.

  2. Connects local recognition to a global movement. By aligning Doula Day with World Doula Day and World Doula Week, the resolution underscores New York’s participation in an international effort to uplift and empower doulas, reflecting broader cultural and health trends.

  3. Cites evidence-based benefits. The text points to specific, research-backed advantages of doula support—including lower rates of c-sections, shorter labor, less use of pain medication, better breastfeeding outcomes, and reduced postpartum mood issues—demonstrating the practical value of doula services.

  4. Promotes public awareness and validation. By calling for official recognition, the resolution seeks to increase public appreciation for doulas, potentially encouraging more support for their work and informing families about their options during childbirth and postpartum care.
