This resolution urges Governor Hochul to designate May 2026 as Wildfire Safety Awareness Month in New York State.
Why it matters
Promotes public education on wildfire risks. By designating a month for wildfire safety awareness, the state encourages residents to learn about fire prevention, preparedness, and response—crucial as human activity is responsible for the majority of wildfires nationwide.
Highlights shared responsibility. The resolution stresses that wildfire prevention isn’t just for areas traditionally prone to fires; as people travel and climate patterns shift, all New Yorkers have a role in reducing risk and being prepared.
Supports alignment with national efforts. Linking New York’s observance to National Wildfire Awareness Month could facilitate access to broader resources, best practices, and public campaigns, potentially increasing the effectiveness of local efforts.
Encourages proactive policy and community activities. By urging action at local, state, and national levels, the resolution sets the stage for more coordinated prevention initiatives, public safety messaging, and potentially, future legislative or funding support for wildfire risk reduction.
