What's happening

This resolution recognizes May 6, 2026, as a day to honor New York small business owners.

Why it matters

  1. Impacts Small Business Owners Statewide. This resolution highlights the importance of small businesses throughout New York, acknowledging that nearly 99% of businesses in the state are small, and that they collectively employ millions—making it relevant for communities and local economies across urban, suburban, and rural areas.

  2. Pushes for Direct Influence in Policy. By specifically calling for small business owners (including the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Voices community) to have a “meaningful and ongoing seat at the table,” the resolution signals legislative support for giving these entrepreneurs a stronger, more formalized role in shaping economic policy, which could lead to more practical and responsive laws affecting access to capital, workforce development, and business growth.

  3. Encourages Ongoing Engagement, Not Just Recognition. Beyond symbolic recognition, the resolution commits the State Legislature to continued engagement with small business owners, suggesting this could have long-term consequences for how economic development strategies are crafted and ensuring entrepreneurs’ voices are consistently heard in policymaking.
