What's happening
This resolution urges Governor Hochul to designate April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in New York State.
Why it matters
Highlights the prevalence and impact of sexual assault. By citing alarming statistics (such as frequency of assaults, age of victims, and low incarceration rates), the resolution underscores the widespread and devastating effects of sexual violence in New York and nationally.
Emphasizes the need for education and prevention. The resolution calls for increased education, public awareness, and community involvement to prevent sexual violence, suggesting that legislative recognition can help mobilize resources and change attitudes.
Supports survivors and challenges harmful norms. By urging public acknowledgment and active involvement, the resolution aims to foster an environment where survivors are supported and harmful attitudes condoning sexual assault are confronted, potentially leading to cultural and policy changes.
Signals government commitment. The formal request for gubernatorial action and recognition by the legislature sends a message of political and institutional support, which can help legitimize and strengthen ongoing prevention and survivor support efforts across the state.
