What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Hochul to declare August 2025 as Black Business Month in New York to recognize and support Black-owned businesses.

Why it matters

  1. Highlighting Economic Impact. The resolution emphasizes the significant role Black-owned businesses play in New York and the broader U.S. economy, citing their ownership of 3.5 million businesses and the employment of over 1.2 million people, which underscores their importance in driving job growth and economic development.

  2. Raising Policy Awareness. By calling for official recognition, the resolution aims to bring attention to the unique challenges and policy issues affecting Black entrepreneurs, fostering public dialogue and potentially spurring legislative or executive actions to address these concerns.

  3. Encouraging Community Engagement. The resolution actively encourages individuals, organizations, and corporations to support Black-owned businesses through intentional patronage and promotional initiatives, suggesting that such support can lead to broader economic benefits and job creation.

  4. Supporting Cultural Recognition and Pride. Beyond economics, the resolution seeks to foster increased pride, heritage preservation, and dignity within the Black community, framing Black Business Month as a time to celebrate achievements and build a more inclusive state identity.
