What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Hochul to proclaim November 2025 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in New York.

Why it matters

  1. Pancreatic cancer is particularly deadly and under-recognized, with survival rates remaining extremely low and little improvement over decades—this resolution highlights the urgency for greater public and governmental attention.

  2. The disease disproportionately affects certain populations (such as people of Eastern European Jewish and African-American descent) and has increasing incidence and death rates, signaling widening health disparities and a growing public health challenge.

  3. Research into pancreatic cancer is severely underfunded compared to other cancers with similar mortality, so greater awareness could translate into more advocacy and potentially increased funding for research and early detection.

  4. Raising awareness as urged by this resolution may encourage more citizens to learn about risk factors (like smoking, obesity, and family history), which could promote earlier detection and possibly improve outcomes for those at risk.
