BILL NUMBER:A10620
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to desig- nating a portion of the state highway system in the town of Ellicott as the "Roger Tory Peterson Memorial Bridge"
Purpose or general idea of bill
This would recognize the historic significance of Roger Tory Peterson to the Jamestown area by naming the bridge on the Interstate 86 which crosses over Falconer-Kimball Stand Road/County Route 138 in the Town of Ellicott as the "Roger Tory Peter- son Memorial Bridge."
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1: Adds a new Section 342-11 to the highway law designating a portion of interstate route eighty-six as the "Roger Tory Peterson Memorial Bridge."
Section 2: Provides that the Commissioner of the Department of Transpor- tation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage reflecting the ceremonial designation of this bridge as the "Roger Tory Peterson Memorial Bridge."
Justification
In recognition of Jamestown, New York, native and famed naturalist and conservationist Roger Tory Peterson, the naming of this bridge in Jamestown will honor his memory, while distinguishing James- town as having been his hometown. Roger Tory Peterson is perhaps best blown as the father of modem birdwatching and inventor of the modem field guide, having authored numerous birding field guides that brought the avocation of birdwatching to new levels of popularity. This dedi- cation will help to bring further recognition to his greatly influential work in environmental conservation and ornithology while promoting the Jamestown area as a popular tourist destination.
