Title of bill

An act to amend the tax law, in relation to authorizing the city of Peekskill to impose hotel or motel taxes within such city

Purpose or general idea of bill

This bill would amend the Tax Law to permit the City of Peekskill to impose a hotel or motel tax.

Summary of specific provisions

This bill would add a new section Section 1206-aa to the Tax Law to authorize the City of Peekskill to adopt and amend its local laws to impose a tax upon hotel and motel rooms in the City of Peekskill.

The rate of such a tax would not be permitted to not exceed three percent (3%) of the per diem rental rate for each room, and that it is not applicable to a permanent resident of a hotel or motel.

The tax would be collected and administered by the chief fiscal officer of the City of Peekskill and in the same manner as other taxes are now collected and administered. Local laws may provide for the filing of returns and the payment of the tax on a monthly basis or on the basis of any longer or shorter period of time.

Justification

Currently, the City of Peekskill does not impose a tax on visitors who stay in hotels or motels within the City. The City of Peekskill has requested the authority to impose a motel/hotel tax. This bill would accommodate the request of their city council.
