What's happening

This bill allows community colleges in New York with associate nursing programs to also offer four-year bachelor's degrees in nursing.

Why it matters

  1. Expands access to BSN degrees. By allowing community colleges to offer four-year nursing degrees, more students—especially those from underserved or rural areas—could pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) without needing to transfer to a distant or more expensive four-year institution.

  2. Addresses the nursing shortage. This change could help alleviate the critical shortage of nurses, particularly BSN-prepared nurses, by increasing the number of graduates who meet hospitals’ growing requirements for bachelor’s-level education.

  3. Potentially lowers education costs. Community colleges typically charge lower tuition than four-year schools, so this bill could make obtaining a BSN more affordable for many students, reducing student debt and financial barriers to entering the nursing profession.
