What's happening

This bill extends the authorization for hunting big game with rifles in Albany County until October 1, 2020.

Why it matters

  1. Extends hunting opportunities. By pushing the expiration date to 2020, hunters in Albany County can continue using rifles for big game hunting for two more years, which may benefit those who prefer rifles over other hunting methods.

  2. Potential economic impact. The extension could support local businesses (such as outfitters, gun shops, and lodging providers) that benefit from hunting activity during big game seasons.

  3. Wildlife management implications. Continued rifle hunting may affect local wildlife populations and management strategies, as rifles typically allow for longer-range and potentially more effective hunting than other methods.

  4. Signal of ongoing evaluation. The use of a sunset clause (expiration date) and its extension suggests lawmakers are monitoring the impact of rifle hunting in Albany County and may revisit or adjust the policy based on future outcomes or feedback.
