What's happening
This bill extends the authorization to hunt big game with rifles in Albany County until October 1, 2020.
Why it matters
Extending rifle hunting authorization allows hunters and local landowners to continue using rifles for big game hunting. , which may be important for community traditions, wildlife management, and local economies tied to hunting activities.
The extension delays the expiration of rifle hunting permissions by two years. , giving state agencies and lawmakers more time to assess the impacts of rifle hunting in Albany County—such as on safety, wildlife populations, and public opinion—before making permanent decisions.
Maintaining the ability to hunt with rifles could impact the effectiveness and safety of big game population control. , as rifles have different range and accuracy characteristics compared to other legal hunting methods, potentially affecting both hunter success rates and public safety concerns.
