What's happening
This bill requires courts to suspend the privilege to operate a pleasure vessel and possibly vessel registration when a driver's license is revoked or suspended for certain violations.
Why it matters
Expands the consequences of certain driving offenses. If your driver’s license is suspended or revoked for violations under this article (such as DWI), you will also lose the right to operate a pleasure vessel (like a boat or jet ski), meaning penalties now extend beyond just driving.
Potential loss of vessel registration. Courts are given the discretion to suspend not just your operating privileges, but also to suspend your vessel’s registration, increasing the impact on those who own and use pleasure vessels.
Reinforces the connection between road and waterway safety. By linking driving offenses with boating privileges, the law aims to deter dangerous behavior across different types of vehicles, signaling that reckless conduct on the road can affect your ability to enjoy recreational boating.
Automatic reinstatement after penalty period. Once your suspension or revocation period ends, your ability to operate a pleasure vessel and register a vessel is restored, ensuring the punishment is temporary but significant.
