What's happening

This bill increases annual supplemental education funds for the Yonkers city school district based on enrollment growth and foundation aid calculations.

Why it matters

  1. Links school funding directly to enrollment growth. By tying additional funds to percentage increases in student enrollment, the bill ensures that Yonkers receives more resources as its student population grows, helping to address the challenges of expanding class sizes and resource needs.

  2. Uses foundation aid as a multiplier. The calculation for extra funds is based on the district’s foundation aid, which is designed to reflect the basic costs of educating each student; this approach aims to make the funding increase more responsive and equitable.

  3. Exempts Yonkers from certain funding restrictions. The new increase in aid will not be subject to the limitations of section 211-d, potentially allowing Yonkers more flexibility in how it uses its supplemental education improvement funds compared to other districts.

  4. Could set a precedent for other districts. If successful, this targeted, enrollment-based approach to supplemental funding might be considered for other growing school districts seeking fairer state support.
